Pedalling SeaSides – a sonic bike experience

PEDALLING SEASIDES IN THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS

Pedalling SeaSides is a unique cycling tour along the beachfront of Scheveningen in The Hague, Netherlands, with an immersive soundscape created by sound artist Kaffe Matthews. The project was commissioned and produced by iii in cooperation with Satellietgroep and Studio Loos and was implemented from July 4th to August 2nd, 2015.

CONTEXT

Pedaling SeaSides is a cycling tour along Scheveningen beachfront that combines cycling with an immersive soundscape. The intervention involves a fleet of sonic bikes equipped with GPS and loudspeakers that play sounds synchronized with the riders' movement and surroundings, encouraging them to slow down, stop, or appreciate moments of silence. The design allows observers to appreciate the piece without the need for headphones [1].

INTERVENTION STRATEGIES

The soundscape strategy for Pedalling Seasides includes using rhythm and work songs to motivate riders uphill and rewarding them with drones and delicate tones at the tops. Matthews also incorporated samples of 70's science fiction music, fairground organs, and alpha waves to create an immersive experience inspired by the unique atmosphere of Kijkduin [1]. By responding actively to the users' movements, this soundscape intervention enhances the immersive experience of the location.

The project has received positive media coverage and appears to have been well-received by riders and the local community [1].
